Descriptions:
We often hear people say that houses built in the past were stronger and better maintained than the ones being built today. The reason behind this is a tradition that our ancestors followed consistently.
My name is Madhanashree, and I am a structural engineer.
Before explaining the tradition, let us look at the rainfall pattern of Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu, we receive rainfall mainly through the South-West monsoon and the North-East monsoon. The South-West monsoon usually occurs from the end of July to September, and the North-East monsoon occurs from October to December.
Now let us understand the tradition. In Tamil culture, there are three important festivals: Pongal, Aadi Perukku, and Diwali.
You may wonder what connection these festivals have with construction. Before each of these festivals, our ancestors used to maintain and prepare their houses.
During Aadi, homes were prepared before the monsoon seasons. Before Diwali, houses were checked and repaired in preparation for heavy North-East monsoon rains. Before Pongal, homes were cleaned and maintained to prepare for the summer season.
Because maintenance was done three times a year, houses remained strong and durable for generations.
Here are the key maintenance activities that should be done regularly:
Deep cleaning
Pest control
Fixing plumbing and electrical issues
Waterproofing wherever required
Painting interior walls once every two to three years
Painting exterior walls once every five years
Regular de-cluttering
If you follow these maintenance practices three times a year, your house will remain as strong and well-maintained as the day it was built.
