Descriptions:
Let’s see the difference between a mason’s calculation and a structural engineer’s calculation.
My name is Madhanashree. I am a structural engineer.
“You don’t need a plan or structural drawing to build a building—I can do it myself.” Even if you have a plan or a soil test, we can prepare complete structural drawings in 2–3 days.
For example: a 12-foot column—then a 1-foot beam. For that beam, you might use 4 bars of 12 mm, 2 bars of 10 mm, and 8 mm stirrups. A slab might be taken as 5 inches as usual. These are typical rule-of-thumb approaches.
But every project is different. Each room has a different size. There may be cantilevers for balconies, staircases, and water tank positions. All these require proper load analysis before finalizing the design.
You might say, “I’ve built 300 houses over 30 years—don’t I have experience?”
Yes, experience matters. But even if we’ve completed 100 projects, for the 101st project, we still start from scratch—step by step, without skipping any process. That’s how we ensure accurate and safe results.
Building construction isn’t just about experience or assumptions. The legal responsibility and liability of a building lies with a qualified structural engineer. Others, including mechanical engineers, typically won’t take that responsibility.
If you’re constructing a building, make sure it’s designed and verified properly.
