Generally, we suspect the lubricant first. But there are three other major causes of overheating:
Internal Clearance
Every bearing has an internal clearance. When this clearance is not ideal, overheating is bound to happen.
Misalignment
When there is misalignment between the drive equipment and the driven equipment, overheating also occurs.
Improper Mounting
When bearings are not mounted properly, overheating can result.
Every bearing needs to be mounted following specific procedures. The mounting instructions and the required tools are provided by the respective bearing suppliers. When these instructions and tools are not followed, bearings are mounted improperly — leading to overheating.
To eliminate these causes, maintaining a proper maintenance record is very important:
Know the quantity of lubricant used in each bearing.
Record the radial internal clearance of the bearing before and after mounting.
Maintain the alignment correction readings.
If these maintenance records are maintained as per the bearing manufacturer’s guidelines, overheating of the bearing can be effectively eliminated.
